Begger Woman with Hungry Child: Christ in Disguise

7 06 2014

In Tolstoy’s beautiful story, Where Love is, God Is, there is the story of an old cobbler who hears a voice in his sleep one night. The voice tells him that on the very next day the Lord Jesus will visit him. Next morning, he begins his work in a spirit of high expectation as he eagerly awaits the coming of the Lord. But the only visitors he has that day are people in distress. First, there is an emaciated old beggar with a rattling tubercular cough. The old cobbler takes him in, warms him by the fire and gives him food. Next comes a half frozen, thinly clad woman carrying her hungry baby in her arms. She needs food and clothing and the old cobbler obliges. Then an old apple-woman comes. She is terribly upset because a boy has tried to steal her apples. The cobbler knows the boy and he is able to bring the two together and reconcile them. This day has not turned out as expected, but the cobbler has not forgotten the promise of the Lord’s visit. Tired now, he falls asleep in his chair and he hears the same voice from the previous night, ‘I was hungry and you fed me, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was sick and you ministered to me’.

[…] was reminded of Tolstoy’s story Where love is, God is. And the story of Baucis and Philemon in Greek mythology. Perhaps I’m being rather fanciful, […]

There’s the good news, the world is a valley of tears, we were promised a world where no one will ever shed a tear again. Love the Lord and be united in His Church. We hope.

See the The Face of Jesus in a poor person on the street. I feel soo sorry for very young children going around cars begging in the rain at the intersection signal light while on red. And then I think about lawmakers stealing by the billions with their pot bellies in airconditioned rooms. The money could have emancipated our poor. It’s a cruel world.

That much is true Art Pagsanghan, the rich should know that God gave them wealth to distribute to the poor and not to feed fat.

There is allot of selfish people can’t help the poor people. Have u read Good Samaritan man in NT. St.Martin was Roman soldier & a miracle man appeared to him when he realized it was Lord.

What you say is true Mary Beth Remisoski, it is hard to many people to see Christ in the poor because–poor people smell sometime, but that is the test of true love. That is why Pope Fancis is showing us a lot of good christian example. It is time Christian return to the spirit of the gospels

.My 2 next door neighbor went adjoined Peace Corps which u have to served 2 yrs helping the poor countries which it is the poorest people that only come home on the vacation time. U have to have good health to adjoined with physical & mental in the Peace Corps. The Peace Corps allowed plus your DR bills in the poorest countries where u at.. Peace Corps will pay your college for 2 yrs. Then my neighbor comes back after 2 yrs & told us allot about stuff in the poorest area that they were in it & the Gov doesn’t even help them….By the way, my dad survived w/ out house & old bath tub which they had bath once a wk. Then when he came back from service his parent remodel the pantry room into bathroom which he was happy cuz his parent was getting tired of old fashion stuff. IF I WAS A BUSINESS PERSON FROM BEING FARMER BUSINESS I WOULD HIRED A POOR PERSON DO FARM WORK PLUS GIVEN FREE FOOD ALONG LIVING IN BIG BARN OR SET UP A TENT W/ LOW WAGES FROM LONG HRS.. They can used laundry & shower that i can shared w/ but when strangers used showers u have to spray bathroom chemicals to reduces the bacterias.

Yes, Mary Beth Remisoski that is why it is so hard to be a Christian, to love Christ when he is disguised as a smelling poor man is tough test. I remember reading of story of St. Francis of Assisi, how he saw a ulcerous leper and was about to flee when a voice told him that it was Christ, so he walked up and kissed the stinking leper and instantly the leper turned into Jesus
